Conducted by Stardust Center staff or faculty affiliates, these studies on various affordable housing and community issues represent research findings that can guide design, planning and policy practices. ASU encourages its scholars to pursue research that will impact society, conduct that research in a way that recognizes its potential impact, and share it with people in a way for it to make that impact. Evaluation Studies or post-occupancy evaluations (POEs) evaluate and explain the effectiveness ("EEE") of various housing policies and practices on health, economic, social, environmental, and other important outcomes. Strategic basic research is undertaken to acquire new knowledge directed onto specific broad areas in the expectation of useful discoveries. Applied research is very similar to basic research, only in a setting where the implications of the research are immediately obvious. It provides a broad base of knowledge necessary for solution of recognized practice problems. Widely valued by practitioners, case studies represent well-documented and systematic examinations of the process, decision-making and outcomes of a project, that are often used to inform future practice, policy, theory and/or education. In particular, valuable lessons can be derived from comparative case studies.
