Under the auspices of a grant from the Home Depot Foundation, in October 2007, the Salt River Community Housing Division (SRCHD) partnered with ASU Stardust Center's design and technical assistance team to explore ways to design a multigenerational, multifamily, village that is responsive to cultural, climatic, economic, and health conditions of the SRPMIC Community. The goal of the grant was to provide research, educational outreach, and to allow for design innovation.
The SRCHD and the ASU Stardust Center architects held six design charrettes and two open house review sessions with the SRPMIC Community to gather ideas and work collaboratively in this effort. From this direct-input process, ASU Stardust Center developed several site plans and home designs along with a conceptual master plan document.
Many sustainable housing practices emerged as priorities from the design charrettes including; Active Public Space, an interconnected Multi-Use Trail, Edible Gardens, Solar Harvesting, and Rainwater Harvesting. The scholarly report was prepared with the generous financial support of the Home Depot Foundation.
