The City of Avondale in the west Valley has engaged the ASU Stardust Center as part of a team of consultants led by Silicon Valley Advisors to develop a new vision for the revitalization of the historic city center, Old Town Avondale. The Stardust Center led the community engagement efforts, involving Old Town residents, business owners and city officials in a planning process to determine the future of the core area of Old Town, currently a neglected and deteriorated part of a rapidly growing city. The planning process included public design workshops focusing on the two primary commercial corridors of Old Town, Western Avenue and Main Street. As part of a larger effort to transform the area into a pedestrian-oriented urban village, five selected intersections were redesigned by the Stardust Center into "gateway" developments with mixed-use and mixed-income residential over street-level retail and live-work housing. The Master Plan is expected to be completed in the summer of 2008.
