The ASU Stardust Center engages in design/build demonstration homes to create replicable models of affordable, sustainable, and culturally responsive housing. Each home is specifically designed for the climate and the culture of the community in which it is built. The homes are designed utilizing green technologies and materials that are intended to demonstrate the potential for the use of alternative approaches to housing that will conserve energy, water, and resources while creating healthier environments for the inhabitants. The homes are designed to meet or exceed the US Green Building Council's LEED for Homes standards. Utilizing computer simulations, the homes are designed to optimize energy use in the home through orientation, shading, selective placement and sizing of window openings, material selection and passive and active heating and cooling strategies. Upon completion, the homes are monitored to determine the actual energy use and comfort levels achieved.
