This 46-unit development for the non-profit community development corporation,Chicanos por la Causa, is a mixed-income, first-time homebuyer community in South Phoenix that is currently under construction with the first three homes completed in the spring of 2008.
The community is being built to meet or exceed the Enterprise Foundation’s Green Communities Criteria and received the Foundation’s Planning and Construction Grant. The design includes tandem parking to allow for two-car garages on narrower – 40′ wide – lots as well as side yard easements to maximize the use of the space between homes.
The community is one of the first subdivisions in the region to be constructed of Structural Insulated Panels, a panelized system that speeds on-site construction and creates a highly insulated home with reduced cooling and heating requirements. Tankless water heaters further reduce energy use, and low-water fixtures and xeriscaping minimize water use. The colors and forms of these one- and two-story homes are expressive of the Latino community they serve.
The Stardust Center designed the project in collaboration with Cook Associates Architects and will be monitoring the energy use of the homes upon completion through a grant from the Home Depot Foundation and LISC.
